The Rainbow Abalone, also known as Paua, is a special type of abalone shell with intensely shimmering mother-of-pearl in shades of blue and green. For good reason, the Haliotis Iris is considered one of the most beautifully colored abalone shells in the world.
Among the Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand, this shell is traditionally called Paua and is highly valued. It symbolizes the sea, protection, depth, and spiritual connection.
The Paua abalone is used for burning loose white sage, smudge sticks, or palo santo. Smudging is an ancient ritual practice in which herbs or fragrant woods are lit inside the shell to consciously cleanse spaces, places, or one's own energy field.
The shell's natural openings ensure good air circulation and support the even burning of incense.
